Chapter 11, Page 6: Bonk
Hey guys! sorry for no text last week, I was real tired when I made the comic so I never really got around to writing it. You didn’t miss much. A few of you were probably wondering what on earth the “Inverse transitive property of equality” is, and that’s fair, as I had to google the name of it for the comic. Basically, the transitive property of equality is a mathematical proof that states if numbers A and B are equal, and numbers B and C are equal, then numbers A and C would be equal as well. This is basically what Andromeda used to prove how The Lady in White has killed a bunch of people, with the inverse bit added on as Andromeda phrased it as if she was losing power instead of gaining it. Also, Andromeda is right- that is how The Lady in White managed to become intelligent – but she can only get to her intelligence before she turned into a lost – she can’t become some kind of super genius by murdering mages. However, as I’ve said before, she’s still naturally very smart, if not the smartest character in the comic overall. As for how much of her human self before the lost transformation remains in her mind is still currently unknown at this point in the comic, along with what events happened to lead her down that path, but let me just say in a comic where every character has had traumatic life, her story is among the worst.
Also – a few notes about Akila: First off, Akila on this page is more or less just messing with Theo for the fun of it. While she does like him (as for how much, we’re about to find out), she knows that Theo’s not really interested in anyone other than Katrina, and wasn’t really expecting him to go along with it. While it’s canon that Akila tends to happily… get to know people, she’s not the type to chase someone who’s not interested in her. (insert crappy “plenty of fish in the sea” joke here.) I’d go on, but the relationship (not as in the romantic kind) between Theo and Akila is going to be fleshed out in the next couple pages. Akila is also very fun to draw, which played a part in why I added another scene with her in it. She doesn’t get much spotlight in the story, as she’s not as involved in the plot of the comic as Kat or Vi, so I try to get her in where I can. Also quick note: I’ve gotten asked before how Akila’s name is said, and the official pronounciation is saying all the “A”s as an “Ah”, so it would be “Ah-Kah-Lah”. I’m not super picky though. Also, fun fact: Akila isn’t Akila’s actual real name. Her technical nereid name is Actaea* (as one day I decided to google if nereids had names in mythology and that was the closest one to Akila), but due to her getting exiled Kat gave her the name Akila instead. Most nereids have names ending with the “Ah” sound, but I’m not sure why. It just worked out that way. Akila is the only nereid named in TNF’s story, as the nereid queen is just referred to as “the queen.” One last nereid fact – Nereids know magic like humans do (for reasons in lore that I can’t reveal) – and are particularly good at mind control and occasionally healing. Nereids cannot turn into lost, and mind control is not habit forming** for them. That said, Akila doesn’t use mind control on people due to it being a touchy subject between her and Katrina.
See you next week.
*Don’t ask me how to pronounce this. I’d guess it’s “Ach-Tie -Ah” but really I have no idea.
** I say “habit forming” in the sense that someone who uses it once is more likely to use it again due to them likely not having an issue with it in the first place. It is not like smoking tobacco – it’s more of a power high sort of thing. Most nereids use mind control fairly often (usually for memory erasing, among other things), but never use it to harm or for personal gain, as a human would be tempted to. Nereids are more or less harmless as long as you don’t attempt to harm them.
