Chapter 12, Page 18: It’s a common outfit
Something to keep in mind: Octavian is six feet tall, which is above average for men in like 90% of the world. Violet just has REALLY long legs. Also, don’t worry too much about the whole tall tales discussion that just happened, it has its reasons for being in the story. Just wait a bit. Also, I randomly learned that the type of face tattoos Vi has has an actual name – “whisker markings”, called that for very obvious reasons. Unlike most examples they go down her cheeks and onto the bottom of her chin, but I’m unsure if they join up or go down her neck a bit. Also, as for the reason Vi’s wearing this outfit, 1. as the title says, it’s fairly common attire for girls her age, and 2. the sweater and tight, long pants both cover lots of skin and are quite warm, and as anyone who has visited a cave can tell you, they can be rather crisp at times. I feel Kat has gotten used to wearing a tank top and shorts everwhere, and as for Akila, she canonically has a higher than normal body temperature to help her swim in colder water that would give a human hypothermia, and is probably one contributing factor (though not anywhere near the biggest one) of why she wears so little. Due to her high temperature, I’d guess her metabolism is also higher than a human’s, and probably helps explain why nereids are more or less exclusively carnivorous. Akila does eat bread or fruit from time to time, but the vast majority of her diet is meats and fish. I’ve had a lot of fun designing the Nereids to make logical sense in a sort of biological aspect (spacial and time manipulation* notwithstanding), and it’s been a lot of fun making her species seem like it could exist. See you next week.
*Nereids can manipulate space and time, but only in their home dimension which basically runs on dream logic, which, as anyone with vivid dreams can tell you, concepts like “steady passage of time” and “euclidean geometry” are more often than not completely ignored. In a nutshell, She has godlike power – but only when she’s in her house.
