Chapter 12, Page 4: Seek the blood
So yeah, I know this page is unfinished, but I didn’t want a repeat of last week. Better than nothing. Also, I feel a bit of an explanation is in order when it comes to the whole dynamic between Octavian and Orion, and Orion’s character in general. Everyone handles trauma and stress differently. Kat covers it up with a mask of happiness, Violet gets spiteful and angry, but Octavian and Orion just… pretend it never happened. This makes Orion, who is incredibly introverted and quiet, very hard to work into the comic, as him interacting with Theo (or anyone else) actively goes against his character. I love him, but he’s just not possible to write in – I’m willing to bet his total lines of dialog is still in the single digits. Octavian does a similar thing, but just chooses to never talk about it instead. For what it is, you’ll probably have to reread to even know what I’m talking about, but a long time ago I mentioned a member of the cast that died years prior to the story, named Ava. Ava was Octavian’s blood sister, and when she died – and it wasn’t a natural death – he just refused to even acknowledge it ever happened from then on. Bringing up Ava is a very good way to get Octavian to punch you in the throat, and is one of the very few things that can anger him at all – but he’ll just snap. Orion’s less… angry about it – he’s just sad. Octavian is all he has. He never knew his family or even his name – Orion is a nickname that he more or less adopted. His life wasn’t necessarily the hardest of the cast, but he’s just… worn down. It’s a sad story, and one I’ll probably get into another time. I know this lore has been a bit of a downer, but I felt it would help explain him better. This chapter’s less of a downer than the last few, but do keep in mind that the story is going down a more serious path for the rest of the runtime. I did warn you that it was all downhill from Kat and Theo dancing, after all.
See you next week.
