Chapter 5, page 17: Book and Blade

IMPORTANT CLARIFYING NOTE: WHEN KAT SAYS “SLEEPING TOGETHER” IN THE LAST PANEL, SHE LITERALLY MEANS ‘LOSING CONSCIOUSNESS FOR REST”, NOT THE NORMAL USE OF THE TERM. JUST CLEARING THAT UP. OCTAVIAN AND VI ARE CLOSE, JUST NOT THAT CLOSE.
… Thanks for listening to that PSA. The books I’m talking about are the ones you’d find in your grandmother’s living room, next to the air freshener and on top of the knitting supplies. You know, pretty much everything by Nora Roberts. If this comic ever WAS to be published as a book, (which it may or many not – I’d need more readers to be able to make the books and not lose money), It would probably get banned or challenged by SOMEBODY. Here’s a list of the top reasons books were challenged:
From my count, in the story that’s been planned, it hits 11 of these. The ones I can reveal without spoiling stuff are:
- Homosexuality: A fair amount (>50%) of the major characters are a sexual identity other than heterosexual. (Homosexual, Bisexual, Asexual, etc.) I’m trying to give the cast some variety, and make the characters different in race as well as ways other than race.
- Occult: The story contains magic. That’s enough to anger some people.
- Unsuited for age group: This one could be argued, as in the words of Lemony Snicket, “I take a group of orphans and make horrible things happen to them.” The story will get darker, just a warning. (Note: Not all of the group are orphans. The ones that are are Katrina, Octavian, Orion, and Andromeda. Akila’s history is unknown, and Davis and Ethan’s mother is still alive. George has a living father. Violet and Ezra’s mother is presentably still alive, but her whereabouts are currently unknown. Wherever she is, Ezra can’t remember, and Violet isn’t telling.
- Gangs: I’m not sure about this one. The treeborn COULD arguably count as a gang, but they interact with the rest of the world peacefully. Violet’s past, however, does have the criminals that took her in.
- Violence: Yeah, this one’s already a thing. I crossed the line with Katrina shooting Violet.
- Racism: If you count Nereids as a race, this applies. As stated before, people don’t like nereids.
HOWEVER, this comic won’t contain any sexually explicit scenes. I’m trying to keep this safe for work. The panel with the speech bubble covering Katrina’s chest is as close as you’re going to get.
