Having Kat wear dark colors makes it hard to make her look 3d.

I know this page looks kinda flat, but due to unforeseen events involving my laptop, I won’t be getting it back until monday at the soonest, so I had to cobble this page together rather last –  minute. If I ever turn these pages into a book, I’ll go back and retouch this. Maybe before then. Who knows.

Also, I’ve gotten a few questions about how I go about drawing these pages. So I decided to make a little 6 – step sequence to show you how everything is done.

Step 1: Basic Outline

I always start with an outline. If the picture is of a person I may use an anatomical model to help with the posing, as in this case.

Step 2: Flat color

I then use the paint bucket tool to color in the areas designated by the outline. At this point it looks rather plain and flat.

Step 3: Extra Layers

If I have other layers, such as hair, accessories, and occasionally arms and hands, I add them here. Again, I start with a outline and then use the paint bucket tool to color in the new layers.

Step 4: Basic Shading

Now, I don’t always do the shading at this stage – sometimes, usually during comic pages – I do it last. However, sometimes I do it before the facial features.

Step 5: Eyes and face

I always draw the face last, so it stays in proportion to the face. I was experimenting with a new style of eye, and I must say, I rather like it. However, I need to do some more reworking of the design if I am to replace the current eye styling.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

This is when I add the background. In this case, there isn’t one, but usually there is. I have wall textures saved for most locations in the comic, so I don’t have to redraw said background every time. This comes in especially handy with the wood texturing – if you look closely you might be able to see how some walls are just inversions recolorations of one another I don’t see this as cheating really, cause once you draw grey brickwork for two months straight in every panel you draw, you’ll understand where I’m coming from on this.

Also, here’s that drawing of Kat and Akila. It’s a doodle, so the proportions of the characters will be off.
