Chapter 8, Page 10: Oof Owie My Bones
Sorry it took me so long to get this up, guys. I was really worn out after I got this finished. Also, yeah this is another page of just dialog, but there wasn’t much I could put in to break up the panels, so they look kinda all the same. It all depends on the dialog, and this page didn’t have that much I could display.
So last week, I talked about how the different colors of the magical robes, and it got me thinking about the colors of the magic powers themselves. Andromeda (as we’ve seen) has blue colored magic, and Theo has that sort of green haze that showed up around him when he somehow gained the ability to use that watch back in chapter 7. The lady in white (who showed up for a few pages) has red magic, and even though Akila hasn’t used magic on – panel yet, hers would be a magenta. Funnily enough, the closer you get to red, the more powerful the wielder is, with Theo squarely at the bottom of the totem pole. This was purely accidental, the colors were chosen to reflect more on the characters than the level of magical skill. This isn’t a rule though – color doesn’t really matter. The more powerful characters do tend to get red as one of their colors, probably due to color psychology or something.
Speaking of color psychology, I’ve noticed something kind of odd. In any game with somewhat realistic graphics that’s intended to freak you out, there’s almost always one of two colors used as a sort of theme. These colors are a sort of rusty brown (more like a dark orange) and a weird dark yellow-green (think like an avocado, but darker.) I’m not going to go on a list of every work that uses these, but there are more than you’d think, and that’s why my hidden video (see the bottom of page 8 – 7) uses a dark green. (I myself find the green more unnerving so that’s why I chose it.) On the other side, there’s a game that’s kinda spooky that uses the brown color palette, and once again, it’s free! (Who doesn’t love free stuff?) It’s called BEWARE (all caps) and basically consists of you being chased in a car through a muddy Russian forest. It’s spookier than it sounds, trust me. Here’s a short demo video, but I’d recommend playing the game first since watching the video ruins the suspense somewhat. Also it’s got a good soundtrack, which I am a sucker for. Link to the game here.
