Chapter 9, page 8: Cute girls in cuter dresses
Hey guys! Hope you all are doing well. I’m not at home at the moment, so my internet connection isnt that great. I’ll have it back for next week, however.
It took me a while to decide on a dress for Akila, and I’m pretty happy with the end result. It’s what I planned the “No grilled skirts or midriff-baring tops joke from earlier in the chapter around. At first I wanted to make the dress red, like her other clothes, but it clashed with her green skin and looked kind of ugly, so I went with black instead. You may have noticed that Akila seems to grow and lose her long, clawish fingernails, and normally thats because they end up looking kinda weird with the thickness of the line I use. Maybe she trims them, I’m not sure. A few people have asked me why and to what extent Akila resembles a typical human woman, and besides the flippers and four fingers, shes anatomically human – not counting in the spiky blue hair and green skin. Nereids do have differently shaped eyelids than we do (and somewhat of a vertical pupil), and that’s why her eyes are that teardrop shape. In my head they can also glow in the dark, but I haven’t had a chance to show that yet. Speaking of Akila, her head and face is probably the hardest of any character to draw and get it to look right. Just minor things, like moving the nose down or widening the head, make her look very out of whack. I’m not sure why I still struggle – shes one of my most, if not THE most drawn character I’ve created, but she’s very hard to nail down. The picture I used a while back for her in the evolution picture is the closest and most accurate picture I have of Akila, which I use as a template to see if everything looks right.
I also drew this shark mermaid for shark week, because sharks are cool.
