I’ll come out and say it – Akila’s a bit of a flirt. (More than a bit, actually.) She was flirting with Theo there, but she’s naturally like that – Nereids are naturally flirtatious. Even though they don’t like humans, they see no problem with flirting with one just to mess with the human’s head, and then killing the human once they’ve grown bored with them. (Don’t worry – Akila isn’t about to murder Theo. She’s much friendlier with humans than most Nereids.) Also, Nereids are polyamorous by nature (technically all the nereids in a clan are in a relationship with each other to an extent), so Akila really doesn’t really see a problem with it – she’s just doing what she finds natural. This isn’t to say she’s not AWARE of the fact she’s flirting – she knows that – but she doesn’t see any problem with it. (If you’re going to ask anything about her sexual habits, please don’t. I’m trying to keep that to a minimum in here.)
This whole “Akila likes humans but Nereids are supposed to hate them” thing is WHY her treatment of Theo varies so wildly – at heart she’s really friendly and even cares about him, but her Nereid side makes her irritable and flirtatious. (Ok, maybe both sides are flirtatious.) It’s kind of like a split personality – just not that extreme. The only person she’s friendly and caring towards all the time is Katrina – but they’re close enough to be sisters. (Because of this, I’m sure some people are convinced they’re secretly a couple. If you’re wondering if that’s true, remember my answer to questions like this: I’m not telling, figure it out yourselves.)
Also, I highly encourage comments on these pages. As long as it’s not something obscene, pointless or malicious, it will likely be posted publicly. If it is, it won’t. (Remember, I’ve got my 8 foot tall cyclops – crab – robot – human mercenary managing my spam and hate mail. Just a warning.)
