Ok, before I get into the normal ramble that goes on here, I’d like to acknowledge some issues with this week’s comic. I know the shading isn’t all that great on this page – it looks kinda flat and dull. Two Reasons: One, the brown background is hard to fill in with little details to make it look interesting, and Two: Last week’s comic tired me out a bit, so I had to rest from drawing for a few days, so this page was a little rushed. Which leads me to a question: Do you guys care if the comic misses a week every once in a while? The main reason I’m against this is because when it comes to regular things (such as writing in a journal), I have to do it every week or I end up stopping doing it, and I really don’t want this comic to end just as it’s starting. So yeah, I’m afraid of the series getting orphaned, which is what happened to all my comic series that I drew as a kid. Let me know.

Ramble time.

So I drew another drawing of a Nereid, except this one has bioluminescent patches making a rainbow pattern in it for no other reason than it is pretty. It’s in my head that Nereids (when they’re all squiddy) glow reflexively when startled or excited, which was evolved as an anti – predatory measure (much like their sensitive upper backs, which allow them to detect changes in water currents indicative of movement). Also a bit of mythological note: Nymphs (such as Nereids and dryads) in classical mythology are mostly seen nowadays as mostly friendly spirits who just went around… …well let’s say they had an active love life. While this is accurate, they could get really, really nasty if you happened to anger them. They could cause crop failure or natural disasters to befall anyone who they disliked, (and crop failure back then was really bad for your well – being.) The myth of queen Cassiopeia having to feed her daughter, (The original) Andromeda to a sea monster was because she said she was better looking than the Nereids, and some other kind of nymph (there’s hundreds of kinds) kidnapped Hercules’s sidekick just because they found him good – looking. There were even nymphs that would tear you apart if you ticked them off (which is what happened to Orpheus from “Orpheus and Eurydice”.). So yeah, they were pretty fearsome – and I’ve tried to keep these things true in the comic, even though Nereids are Squid-Humans. (The whole “Nature control”,”Not liking vanity”,”Kidnapping Men” and “Execution by being torn apart” bits are all in – comic. There’s a reason why Akila doesn’t go around telling people she’s a nereid – most humans who believe in them are terrified of them, and regard them as a man in dark ages Europe would regard a demon. They are not nice.) If you need something to cheer you up, just watch the hypnotic effect of the animation below. See you guys next week.
